Lightning Safety

Lightning Related Incident at Virginia Little League game

You may have heard about the tragic accident on Wednesday night June 3, 2009 during a weather-related delay in a Spotsylvania County (Va.) Little League game. One child died as a result of a lightning strike, and another was injured.

I wanted to advise you that at Boardman Community Baseball we are concerned about the safety of all players and spectators at the fields. At the start of the 2009 season we purchased a ThunderBolt Storm Detector. This is a state of the art device that is used to detect lightning in the area and replaces an older device that we felt was no longer adequate. In addition, we purchased a TV for the Officer of the Day area in order that the Officer of the Day may monitor the weather if potential problems begin to develop. Both of these improvements have been beneficial this season.

All team moms were advised of inclement weather related procedures at the start of season.

Little League International has offered the following websites if you would like additional information on safety procedures.

ASAP March 2009 Newsletter
