BCB Announces Chuck Schafer Scholarship Winners

Citing lasting memories and connecting with family and community in their days playing Little League, Sarah Land and Anthony Triveri have been awarded the 2025 Chuck Schafer Memorial Scholarship from Boardman Community Baseball.

“Growing up with three brothers, the art of being competitive ran freely in my blood. Being the only daughter, I found difficulty in choosing between wanting to be like my brothers and yearning for a sense of self”, said Land. “My playing time at BCB enabled me to have both and so much more!”

Triveri noted, “I never imagined that picking up a mushball at age three would shape my life so profoundly. I wore my uniform daily, game or no game. I couldn’t wait to get to the fields, where days were filled with high fives, French fries, ice cream and new friends.”

“I started pitching when I was nine years old and was absolutely enthralled by the intricate motion and how everything had to fall into place to achieve a perfect strike. A sport that was once simply my family’s thing now became my thing.”, said Land

Land who earned a 4.0 GPA at Boardman High School was a member of the softball and soccer teams. She was also active in many school activities including Key Club, Emerging Leaders, Medical careers Club, and Math Club, while volunteering at Akron Children’s Hospital and Smith Corners Church. Sarah plans on majoring in pediatric cardiology
Ohio State in the fall.

“Little League Baseball taught me that failure is part of success, and how you respond to it makes all the difference.”, said Triveri

Triveri was a 4 year letter winner and captain of the Ursuline baseball team. In addition to sports, was also a Student Ambassador at Ursuline and member of the Spanish Club, while volunteering at many local charities. Anthony graduated with a 4.2 GPA and was accepted into the Honer’s Biology Program at Walsh University where he will continue his baseball career.

“The friendships, the BCB family, the volunteers, the Little League Pledge, night games on L1 and the unforgettable State and District championships all shaped who I am. Little League and BCB is the best example of youth sport in our area.”, sald Triveri

Land noted, “my experience playing softball at BCB taught me the true meaning of cooperation, responsibility and confidence. Softball is evidently a team sport and therefore, cooperation is an absolute necessity to succeed as a team. I learned that being a team player meant prioritizing the needs of the group above mine.”

Boardman Community Baseball honors its children who have shown that lessons learned on the ballfields can be carried to the classroom and throughout life, with the Chuck Schafer Scholarship. Chuck Schafer was a past coach, volunteer and league President who used his skills as a talented architect to design the Fields of Dreams Complex to cater to families who love Little League as he did. He believed in giving back to his community and paying it forward.

This year will mark the 21st year of providing scholarships. During this time, Boardman Community Baseball has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to former BCB ball players.
